Description
The Durango Botanic Gardens (DBG) will dedicate its latest addition to the botanic gardens, the Community Venue Garden (CVG), on Thursday, September 24, 5:00-6:00 pm. The new garden will continue the organization’s mission of horticultural demonstration, education, and inspiration but with a new twist. The garden space, just to the north and west of the library and in front of the 75’ mural, is anchored by a steel pergola stage that will be available to rent for both private and public events.
The new venue will soon be available for a host of private and public events, such as weddings, reunions, parties, plays, and musical performances. Reservations for stage use will go through the Durango Public Library’s room reservation system, beginning September 24. Revenue from the stage use will go to the city. The stage is equipped with a robust electrical service, which DBG says should handle most electrical needs for performances.
“The vision behind this latest offering to the community is the creation of a new, outdoor event and performance venue nestled among three distinct botanical planting beds,” says DBG President Bill LeMaire. The three planting sections include groundcover plants, demonstrating waterwise plants that can help reduce thirsty lawn space, a collection of bulb and companion plants, and a plant bed dedicated to Colorado native plants, local treasures from our own backyard.
“This garden was built with donations from our members, sponsors, and those who purchased tickets for our events, says LeMaire. “That makes this new asset a true community effort. Thanks, Durango!” As a preview of how the stage can be utilized, music for the dedication ceremony will be provided by Tom Ward’s Downfall, a Durango-based Celtic band.
